I didn't get into medicine and feel terrible?

There is a simple answer to your question "What can I do to overcome this?" I started in Med school when I was 32 years old. The only reason I waited so long was because I was unsure if I had the abilities. I regret not doing it sooner but fortunately I finally followed the correct career path.
