Can anyone help me to properly configure the pcsx2 0.9.8?

I have dumped my BIOS ROM and have actually achieved somewhat decent game play. But, I'm still having trouble with the emulation speed. It seems to be extremely laggy and slow. I've watched a few configuration videos and they are just too darn confusing. Can anyone provide me with some step by step configuration tips. no videos please.
