Will I need to buy a new 3DS Compatible R4 if I buy one now?

I want to get a Nintendo 3DS, but I'd like to get an R4 so i can play roms on it. If I were to buy an R4 now, would I need to buy another one when the dev team figures out how to get 3D roms playable? Or will it be a firmware update? I just don't want to have to buy two R4s. Thanks in advance !
