The coronation has no functional status in constitutional law. There is no break even momentarily in the British line of succession. If King A or Queen B dies at 12.49 then the reign of Queen C or King D starts at 12.49. So the coronation is redundant. It is also anachronistic : it is a Christian ceremony wholly inappropriate to a liberal democracy of all faiths and none. Whether we should have a monarchy is one thing; whether the inauguration of a reign should be marked by a Christian ceremony, and a socially pretty exclusive one at that (hardly the Christian spirit), is quite another. Perhaps it could be replaced by a garden party at Buckingham Palace with places allocated by lot.
